SVG and CAD systems agree on coordinates but disagree about presentation. SVG can rely on responsive viewports, strokes, fills, clipping, and browser-specific behavior. CAD usually expects explicit units, closed regions, and predictable linework. An import checklist should expose those differences.
Map the viewBox to physical units
Read the SVG width, height, and viewBox before importing. Choose an import preset that produces a known physical dimension, then measure a calibration edge. If width and height are percentages or omitted, resolve that responsive behavior before judging scale.
Verify
- Write down the intended final width.
- Measure after import rather than trusting the preset.
- Compare both axes for non-uniform stretching.
Resolve fills versus centerlines
A visual outline may be represented by a stroke around a path or by two filled boundary paths. Machining often needs the centerline of the original line. Decide whether the importer should expand strokes, retain centerlines, or convert filled regions into boundaries.
Verify
- Inspect stroke width and line cap settings.
- Confirm that converting strokes does not duplicate geometry.
- Document which representation CAM receives.
Test compound paths and clipping
Compound paths use winding rules to create holes. Clipping paths can hide geometry without deleting it. CAD importers may flatten these differently, producing filled counters or missing sections. Compare outline view with final preview.
Verify
- Check letters and rings with internal holes.
- Expand or inspect clipping groups when holes disappear.
- Verify that hidden geometry is not silently exported.
Round-trip a representative feature
Export a small test feature from CAD, reopen it, and measure it again. This reveals unit conversion, spline approximation, and coordinate precision issues early. Keep the SVG source and imported CAD file together with a short note describing the accepted settings.
Verify
- Measure length, width, and one internal distance.
- Compare curve count and total node count.
- Save the accepted import preset with the project.
Common failure modes
- Do not import percentage-sized SVGs without resolving the viewport first.
- Do not assume a filled outline is equivalent to a CAM centerline.
- Do not accept the first CAD preview if internal counters or clipped regions changed.
